Martens Family Science Scholarship
Overview
The Martens Family Science Scholarship was established in memory of former Plainfield residents Fred and Carolyn Martens. Mr. Martens was a nuclear engineer at Argonne Labs and Mrs. Martens was a librarian at Crystal Lawns and Indian Trail schools.
The Martens Family Science Scholarship will award $2,500 annually to two students from each of District 202's four traditional high schools. Plainfield Academy students are also encouraged to apply through their home high school.
Recipients will be chosen based on grades, financial need, a personal statement, and acceptance and proof of full-time enrollment at an acceptable institution.
Criteria
The recipient plans to major in a STEM-related field (physical or life science, engineering, technology, or math) at a fully accredited state or private university, preferably in Illinois.
The recipient plans to major in a field that offers a doctorate degree in their chosen field.
Qualifications
Provide a copy of current transcript through the first semester of senior year.
Provide a letter of reference from a science teacher affirming his/her merit and intention to continue studying science.
Provide proof of full-time enrollment at an acceptable institution.
Complete an essay of at least 500 words describing yourself, your interest in science, and your professional goals in relation to your major as well as a description of your financial needs. The essay will be reviewed based on grammar, punctuation, clarity and the ability for understanding by a non-science reader.
Award
Award $2,500 annually to two students from each of District 202's four traditional high schools. Plainfield Academy students are also encouraged to apply through their home high school.
